TRWD Board approves comprehensive recreation master plan

By January 24, 2025

TRWD’s Board of Directors voted at their regularly scheduled board meeting on January 21 to approve an updated Recreation Master Plan that will guide the District’s efforts in Tarrant County.

The plan, developed in collaboration with community stakeholders and Dunaway and Associates, outlines a strategic framework that creates alignment between the public, community stakeholders, TRWD’s board of directors, and staff to define TRWD’s role in recreation and events.

“This is an important step in ensuring that our community has access to safe, enjoyable, and sustainable recreational spaces that will serve generations to come,” said Leah King, TRWD’s board president. “It’s about enhancing the experience for our residents while preserving the environment we all cherish.”

“This plan reflects our commitment to serving the recreational needs of our growing communities while protecting the natural resources we manage,” said Dan Buhman, TRWD’s general manager. “We want to enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors by investing in great recreational spaces.”

Key focus areas of the plan are the safety and security of the public, expansion and improvement of trail connectivity, water-based recreation, development of new facilities, and preservation of natural habitats. Other priorities will include creating additional public access, improving amenities, and promoting sustainable use of TRWD’s lakes, parks, and trails.

The approval of the plan follows an extensive planning process that incorporated public input through surveys, workshops, and community meetings. It emphasizes the integration of innovative design with environmental stewardship, ensuring that TRWD properties remain both vibrant and ecologically sound for generations to come.

Implementation of the Recreational Master Plan will begin in 2025, with priority projects such as the design of trail signage and striping and lighted loop trails expected to begin this Spring.
